When
opened in February of
2000, Goliath became the
first new roller coaster
of the new millennium.
Goliath
was designed and manufactured
by Giovanola of
Switzerland. In the
fast few decades,
Giovanola has fabricated
steel for a large amount
of roller coasters and
thrill rides.
Goliath was their first
major roller coaster after
beginning to freely market
themselves as thrill ride
designers in 1998.
The
ride is located in
Colossus County Fair
across from the Buccaneer
and Swashbuckler flat
rides. Giant block
letters that spell out
G-O-L-I-A-T-H greet you as
you enter the queue area.
Goliath's
massive structure looms
high above Colossus, a
massive dual-tracked
wooden coaster which
opened in 1978.
The
ride stands 235-feet in
the air and features a
massive 255-foot, 61°
first drop into a 120-foot
long underground
tunnel. At 85 MPH,
Goliath is one of the
fastest rides in existence.
The ride's 4500-foot long
layout features several
elements including an
air-time filled bunny hop
and an extremely intense
second half filled with an
amazing helix and massive
positive Gs.
Since
the rides opening in 2000,
Goliath has received very
positive reviews from
enthusiasts and is
considered to be one of
the best steel roller
coasters in the world.
In
2001, Six Flags Over Texas
debuted Titan, which is
basically a clone of
Goliath but with an
additional helix before
the mid-course brake run.
With
these two coasters,
Giovanola has
demonstrated their
excellence in roller
coaster design.
