The
Great American Revolution,
as it was known when it
opened in 1976, is a very
significant ride in roller
coaster history. It
was the first modern
roller coaster to feature
a 360° vertical
loop. The ride,
designed by Anton
Schwartzkopf, takes riders
on a journey through the
area's lush landscape as
it travels through several
hills, dips, and curves.
The
ride features a height of
113-feet, a maximum speed
of 55 MPH, and a track
length of
3,457-feet.
Highlights include a
vertical loop, a 144-foot
long tunnel, and a spiral
at the end of the ride.
When
Revolution first opened,
the ride was equipped with
lap-bars only, allowing
for a very comfortable
ride. In the 90s,
over-the
shoulder-restraints were
added for safety and
insurance issues, which
decreased the ride's
popularity among both park
guests and enthusiasts.
Also,
the ride used to run 5
trains simultaneously,
which allowed for
incredible capacity.
Today, a maximum of 3
trains can be run at one
time.
The
Revolution is featured in
several movies including
"Roller Coaster"
(1977) - in which the
grand opening was restaged
for the movie, "KISS
Meets The Phantom of the
Park" (1978),
"Van Nuys Blvd."
(1979), and "National
Lampoon's Vacation"
(1983).
The
Revolution was once
considered to be one of
the greatest roller
coasters on the
planet. Today, the
ride has lost some of its
popularity, but it will
never lose its
historically significance.
